On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Independence of Mauritius, the Embassy of Japan and the Office of the President of the Republic of Mauritius held a Sakura (Cherry Blossom) Tree Planting Ceremony at the State House garden in the morning on October 30.

式典では加藤大使、ヴァイアプリ大統領代行のスピーチの後、二人により桜の苗木の植樹が行われました。この桜は当館がNPO法人育桜会より寄贈を受けたもので、大統領府へ3本贈呈しました。

At the ceremony, Ambassador Kato and the Acting President of the Republic of Mauritius, His Excellency, Mr. Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory, G.O.S.K expressed their views on the importance of the Sakura tree in the Japanese tradition and culture. This strong symbolic gesture aimed at strengthening further the relations between Mauritius and Japan. The Japanese Cherry Blossom tree / Sakura holds a very important place in the Japanese culture, as the Sakura, national flower of Japan is deeply loved and praised by Japanese people.
Three specimens of the PRUNUS CERASOIDES, also known as Himayala Zakura have been donated by the Embassy of Japan in Mauritius with the support of the NPO Cherry Blossom Association (Ikuoukai). The Japanese Cherry Blossom seedlings have been grown in quarantine with the support and under the supervision of the National Plant Protection Office (NPPO) before finding their place in the Garden of the State House, Reduit. Other sites have been identified for the planting of Japanese Cherry Blossom trees in Mauritius for the population to enjoy including Trou aux Cerfs, near the Doppler Radar Meteorological Station in Curepipe and the Curepipe Botanical Garden.
