2. The World Tsunami Awareness Day on November 5th is an international day, which was proposed by Japan and co-tabled by 141 countries at the United Nations (UN) General assembly in December 2015. It was adopted by consensus for the purpose of raising international awareness of the threat of tsunami and precautionary measures against it.
Okinawa, where this summit will be held, is the southernmost island prefecture in Japan and is often subject to many typhoons. In 1771 ‘Meiwa Giant Tsunami’, one of the world largest tsunami caused many casualties in Okinawa.
The Summit will provide a good opportunity to future leaders from each country to raise their awareness of the natural disaster risk management so that they will be able to undertake national resilience measures by protecting people’s lives, bodies and properties from disaster, and thus minimizing the impacts of damages to people’s lives and economy.

3. Mauritian students will arrive in Tokyo on November 4th, 2017. After one day stay in Tokyo, they will travel to Okinawa where they will participate in fieldwork, presentations and discussions.
It is hoped that they will deepen their understanding of natural disasters by the Summit and enlighten Mauritian people about disaster measures.

4. A send-off reception for the participants was held on October 27 in the presence of the Heads of Schools and officials of Mauritius Government at the Embassy of Japan in Port Louis.
On October 30, the participants paid a courtesy call on Hon. Seetanah Lutchmeenaraidoo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade. It is also expected that the relationship between Japan and Mauritius will be more strengthened.
