Message from Ambassador

2024/2/6
My name is KAN Masahiro, and I am assuming the post of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mauritius.

Japan and Mauritius are bound together by a special friendship of mutual understanding and cooperation, which has been woven by the predecessors of our two countries. I am honoured and humbled by the responsibility to serve as a bridge to further develop the friendly relations between the two countries on the basis of our strong cooperative relationship.

Japan aims to achieve the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” based on common values and principles including the rule of law, thereby ensuring peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region as a whole and, by extension, in the world. Mauritius which is located in the Indian Ocean, which connects Africa with its great potential and Asia with its remarkable growth, is an important partner of Japan as both countries share fundamental values such as the rule of law and democracy. Mauritius is also active in concluding investment agreements and attracting foreign investment, and has an excellent investment environment within Africa.

Japan and Mauritius have had diplomatic relations since the independence of Mauritius in 1968, and bilateral relations have been growing stronger year by year, especially since the opening of our Embassy here in 2017. Our development cooperation relations have been targeted assistance to support sustainable development and economic growth. Mauritius is vulnerable to natural disasters such as cyclones and other effects of climate change due to its geographical characteristics. Therefore, formulating a disaster management system to minimise damage is an urgent issue. As part of efforts in tackling climate change, Japan supports the development of disaster risk reduction system and the training of human resources to cope with downpours and floods. We are also working to strengthen Mauritius’s capacity to respond not only to natural disasters but also to maritime safety. In the environmental area, Japan is supporting to conserve ecosystems in consideration of biodiversity and to improve livelihood of artisanal fishers’ communities.

For Mauritius, which has a vast exclusive economic zone, maritime security is fundamental issue to support sound economic activities. As the global positioning of the Indian Ocean region and the blue economy become increasingly important, Japan will support Mauritius to improve its trade and investment environment to become an investment hub for Africa, and to strengthen its maritime security measures by helping to build its comprehensive governance capacity, including the coast guard, police and judiciary.

I recognise that it is my duty to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries. And the Embassy of Japan has always been with the people of Japan and Mauritius. We consider your safety, security, health and development to be our primary mission.

I will continue to fulfil my mission in dialogue with you, and with your suggestions and advice, in cooperation with the people and government of Mauritius.

I look forward to your continued support and cooperation.

January 2024
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mauritius
