2022/11/1

On 19 October 2022, the handing over ceremony of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) was held at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Rodrigues in the presence of Ambassador KAWAGUCHI, Mr. Johnson ROUSSETY, Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues Regional Assembly, Mr Jean Nicolas VOLBERT, the Commissioner for Health and Others, other members from the Embassy of Japan in Mauritius and from the Rodrigues Regional Assembly and many hospital staff.

Although breast cancer is the most common cancer among the female population of the Rodrigues, there was no mammography equipment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital that is the only general hospital on the island. Due to these circumstances, women of Rodrigues needed to travel to Mauritius but many of them faced difficulties with travel distance and long waiting period for an appointment.
With the grant of 77,546 euros, the project equipped a room at the hospital with digital mammography equipment for early breast cancer detection. It also provided technical training for the hospital staff in the use of equipment.
