Interview with Ambassador KAN
On 6th November 2024, the signing ceremony of the grant contract for the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) was held at Rodrigues Central Administration, Port Mathurin. The grant contract was signed by Mr. KAN Masahiro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Mr. Jean Frederic Ravina, President of Rodrigues Regional Youth Council (RRYC) in the presence of Mr. Joseph Varok Ravina, Commissioner for Youth and Sport and Others, Mr. Joseph Christian Leopold, G.O.S.K, Chairperson of Rodrigues Regional Assembly and other relevant stakeholders.

The initiatives of the RRYC include the management of the Atelier de Savoir (ADS) programme. The ADS is a vocational training programme which has been implemented by the RRYC with the support of the Commission for Youth and Sports since 2003. The progeramme supports school drop-out youths through providing five vocational courses consisting of Sustainable Agriculture, Mechanics and Welding, Woodworks, Pastry and Food Processing, and Textile.

However, there are problems such as breaking down of equipment for the training courses as they are used for more than 20 years. Also, the island is facing a significant shortage of water, and it is becoming more and more difficult for the RRYC to secure the sufficient amount of water for operation of the ADS.

Through “The Project for the Provision of Equipment for the Vocational Training School for the Island of Rodrigues”, the youth organization will receive the grant up to 22,922 euros (approximately 1.1 million rupees). The grant will be used to provide vocational training equipment such as one green house, three water tanks, one welding machine and one wood planer at the ADS. Upon completion of the project, the RRYC will be able to provide youth trainees with better practical skills in an improved learning environment to enhance their capacity and broaden their future work opportunities.

The following day, Ambassador KAN visited one of the training school for Woodworks in Songes, took a tour of the center and interacted with ADS students.
