GOKAN JAPAN – ONIGIRI

On December 7, 2024, Embassy of Japan held the second GOKAN JAPAN event at the Gymkhana Club in Vacoas. GOKAN JAPAN is a series of events this year aimed at experiencing Japanese culture through the five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. The second event, "Onigiri," was attended by approximately 80 guests.

The event focused on Onigiri, the most popular dish in Japan, eaten more frequently than Ramen or Sushi. After a welcome speech by Mr. Kaushik Reesaul, Executive Chairman of the Gymkhana Club, and Counselor Tanaka of the Embassy, ​​guests learned more about Onigiri in a presentation and participated in a workshop to make Onigiri wrapped in plastic wrap individually. The guests then watched the 2006 film "Kamome Diner" directed by Mayumi Komatsu while tasting Onigiri that the guests made themselves with a cup of Miso soup.

In closing, Ambassador KAN expressed his gratitude to all the guests and stated his hope that the ties between Japan and Mauritius will continue to deepen so that a wide range of participants can continue to experience Japanese culture up close.
