On 26th November 2025, a handover ceremony for the grant contract for the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) was held at Grand La Fouche Mangues. The ceremony was conducted in the presence of H.E. KAN Masahiro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mauritius, Mr. Franceau Aubret Grandcourt, G.O.S.K, Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues Regional Assembly, Mr. Jean Frederic Ravina, President of Rodrigues Regional Youth Council (RRYC), Mr. Joseph Varok Ravina, Commissioner for Youth and Sport and other relevant stakeholders.
Located approximately 560 kilometres east of Mauritius’ capital Port Louis, Rodrigues Island continues to face challenges related to youth poverty. In this context, the ADS vocational training programme, implemented by the RRYC with the support of the Commission for Youth and Sports since 2003, has played a vital role in promoting sustainable livelihoods. The programme provides free vocational training in five key areas which includes agriculture, mechanics and welding, carpentry, baking and cooking, and sewing to approximately 60 secondary school dropouts each year.
Under “The Project for the Provision of Equipment for the Vocational Training School for the Island of Rodrigues,” funded through a financial contribution of €22,922, new vocational training equipment was procured, including one greenhouse, five water tanks, one welding machine, and one wood planer. This support will enable the RRYC to provide youth trainees with better practical skills in an improved learning environment to enhance their capacity and broaden their future work opportunities.
The following day, on the 27th of November, Ambassador KAN presided over the unveiling ceremonies at the Woodworks Training Centre and Mechanics and Welding Training Centre, and attended the award presentation, where he commended the achievements of the trainees.
