New Year's Greetings from Ambassador KAN, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mauritius
2026/1/5
I would like to respectfully extend my sincere New Year's greetings to everyone.
Last year was an important one for the bilateral relations between Japan and Mauritius.
On August 22 last year, the Embassy of Mauritius in Japan was newly inaugurated in Tsukiji, Tokyo. The opening ceremony was a grand event, attended by many distinguished guests, especially the Honourable Prime Minister Ramgoolam and his spouse, as well as other domestic and international dignitaries. The inauguration of the Embassy of Mauritius in Japan is expected to further strengthen our bilateral relations.
Moreover, the TICAD 9 was held in Yokohama at the end of August. A large delegation from Mauritius led by the Honourable Prime Minister Ramgoolam , which included members of the Mauritian government, the Economic Development Board (EDB) and representatives from the business sectors. During the TICAD 9, a bilateral meeting was also held between the Honourable Prime Minister Ramgoolam and the former Prime Minister Ishiba. In addition to plenary sessions and corporate exhibitions, business meetings were conducted between the Japanese and Mauritian business sectors, further strengthening bilateral ties.
Furthermore, the Mauritius’s pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai held from April to October was a great success. In July, the Honourable Foreign Minister Ramful visited the Expo in Japan to attend the celebration of Mauritius’s National Day. The Expo was a major event that will remain in history and in people's memories.
As we enter the new year, we intend to further strengthen our cooperative relationship with Mauritius. While Mauritius has achieved economic growth primarily through tourism and financial services, its status as a small island nation makes it vulnerable to external factors such as global economic trends, climate change, natural disasters like cyclones, and infectious diseases. Strengthening its capacity for climate change measures and disaster prevention remains an ongoing challenge. Therefore, Japan will continue to provide support for sustainable development and economic growth that addresses these vulnerabilities. We will specifically prioritize assistance in environmental and climate change measures, disaster prevention, maritime security, and capacity building for sustainable economic growth, while upholding a people-centered approach that emphasizes supporting the socially vulnerable.
Furthermore, recognizing that people-to-people exchanges form the foundation for developing relations between nations, Japan will work to expand such exchanges and disseminate information about Japanese culture. We will continue our efforts to further deepen both people-to-people and state-to-state relations as the firm foundation of Japan-Mauritius ties.
Amid complex international circumstances, Mauritius, which shares common values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, is an important partner for Japan in advancing the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”. The importance of strengthening relations with Mauritius has never been greater. Serving as Ambassador to Mauritius at the forefront of this effort brings me great joy and pride, while also instilling a profound sense of responsibility.
Fortunately, I am very pleased that we currently enjoy extremely good bilateral relations with Mauritius, based on strong trust with His Excellency President Gokhool, the Honourable Prime Minister Ramgoolam, and other government officials, business leaders, and experts. In 2026, we aim to further strengthening and deepening these excellent bilateral ties.
Moving forward, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to ensuring the safety of Japanese nationals and businesses in Mauritius and supporting their activities. The entire Embassy will work as one to further develop Japan-Mauritius relations, and we sincerely ask for your continued support and cooperation.
